Gasket Replacement and Cylinder Head Reinstallation

25. Consider hiring a mechanic in advance to do an inspection of the vehicle once the head is removed. You could have the vehicle towed to a shop or hire a mobile mechanic to come to you. Either way, when the head gasket is replaced there are many parts of the engine exposed that are otherwise difficult to inspect. This is a perfect time to have many components checked out for damage or excessive wear.


Clean the mating surfaces of the head and block using a gasket scraper. Remove all traces of carbon and gasket material. Clean the surfaces with acetone or laquer thinner. Clean out the cylinders with a vacuum. Make sure there is no oil on the surfaces.


Check the block and head surfaces for nicks, scratches or other damage. If there is only slight damage, a file may be used to remove it. Excessive damage requires machining.


Use a correctly sized tap to chase the threads of the head bolt holes. Remove any debris with compressed air. Wear eye protection. Mount each bolt in a vise and use a die to remove corrosion. Check to make sure there are no damaged bolt threads.


Position the new head gasket on the engine block.


Lightly oil the head bolts and install them in their original locations. Following the required sequence, reinstall the bolts according to specifications using a torque wrench.


Reinstall all other remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.


Change the oil and filter and check all fluid levels.


Run the engine and check for leaks and proper operation.
